Artist Shirley Blake at SanCap Art League

Sanibel Captiva Art League is pleased to host well-known artist Shirley Blake in a program, including a painting demonstration, at its next meeting on Thursday, December 19, 2019. The public is invited to attend at Sanibel Community House located at 2173 Periwinkle Way, from 1pm-3pm.
Now a fulltime Florida resident, Shirley Wilson Blake is an Illinois native who lived in MN for forty years. Since the late 1980's, she has taught classes in watercolor, collage, acrylics, and mixed media. “One of my favorite things about teaching,” says Shirley, “is seeing how artists advance in their painting and how they handle all the parts of the composition. I include a critique of every student’s work with each class. It helps all the other artists also as they realize what is important to them in their work.”
With gallery representation in the states of IL, MN, WI, IA, and FL, Shirley has won over 50 awards for her work. Some of her most meaningful highlights are having been three times a finalist for Artists Magazine in Experimental Art, winning Best of Show in MN Watercolor Society, being awarded Best of Show in Northstar Watermedia Society, receiving the Award of Excellence at Uptown Art Fair in Minneapolis, MN, and recently winning the First Place Award for the International Society of Acrylic Painters. Blake has had her work selected for corporate art collections such as Well Fargo, the Minneapolis Mayor's office, Anderson windows, State Farm Ins., Concordia College, and Hamline University.
At the San Cap Art League on December 19th, Shirley will use acrylics to demonstrate painting abstractly from a more realistic subject. She enjoys the challenge of abstract knowing that most art has some abstracted elements in its creation. According to Blake, “Color is prime for me as when you paint abstractly, you eliminate the important element of subject. Color, composition, size, and your own style of painting is what the viewer will see. We all develop a style. When others recognize your style, the viewer sees how you interpret not just realistic but abstract concepts, feelings, thoughts, etc.”
This meeting promises to be interesting, educational and fun. San Cap Art League is the islands’ local art league and all meetings are free and open to the public. Art League activities include weekly plein air events, shows, newsletters, community support and so much more. For information about shows, activities, membership and more, visit
